Professor Shin Byung-joo’s “Best Books of Joseon” is a liberal arts book that selects best books containing the essence of scholarship and thought representing the Joseon Dynasty and three-dimensionally illuminates the background of the book’s birth, the author’s life and philosophy, and the book’s impact on Joseon society, beyond simply introducing the contents of the book. This book aims to discover the identity of Koreans today through the intellectual heritage of the Joseon Dynasty and to awaken the importance of classical reading.

Historian Professor Gye Seung-beom’s “No Scholars We Know” is a historical criticism that directly criticizes the idealized image of integrity, discipline, and service that we commonly have for “Classical Scholar,” an elite class that dominated 500 years of the Joseon Dynasty, and coolly verifies their true appearance and the reality of the country they created. The author defines the Classical Scholar as a hereditary ruling elite armed with Confucian ethics and monopolizes state power, and delves into their “two faces.”
