1. 우주를 지탱하는 두 기둥: 하늘(건)과 땅(곤)
공자는 세상의 모든 이치가 하늘(乾, 건)과 땅(坤, 곤)이라는 두 근본 요소에서 시작된다고 말합니다.
- 하늘은 존엄하고 땅은 가까우니, 이 둘이 정해지면서 세상에는 위와 아래의 질서가 생겨납니다. 즉, 높고 고귀한 것과 낮고 평범한 것이 나뉘는 귀천(貴賤)의 구별이 생겨납니다.
- 움직임(動)과 멈춤(靜): 세상 만물은 끊임없이 움직이거나 멈추는데, 이 움직임에는 변하지 않는 규칙이 있습니다. 이 규칙 속에서 강한 것(剛)과 부드러운 것(柔)이 확연히 구별됩니다.
- 다양성과 길흉: 세상에는 다양한 종(種)과 사회가 형성되고, 이들이 서로 어울리거나 부딪히면서 좋은 일(吉)과 나쁜 일(凶)이 생겨납니다.
하늘에는 별의 운행이나 기상 현상이 나타나고, 땅에는 구체적인 사물과 형상이 나타나면서, 이 둘 사이에서 끊임없이 변화(變化)의 드라마가 펼쳐지는 것입니다.
2. 변화의 에너지: 강함과 부드러움의 마찰
세상의 변화는 강한 기운과 부드러운 기운이 서로 부딪치고 상호 작용하면서 만들어집니다.
- 마찰과 상호작용: 강한 것(乾)과 부드러운 것(坤)이 서로 부딪치고 마찰합니다. 주역의 여덟 가지 기본 요소인 팔괘(八卦)가 마치 그네를 타듯 끊임없이 서로 영향을 주고받으며 진동합니다.
- 자연의 현상: 이 마찰은 우리가 일상에서 보는 거대한 자연 현상으로 구체화됩니다.
- 천둥과 번개는 에너지를 팽창시키고 생명을 깨웁니다.
- 바람과 비는 대지와 만물을 촉촉하게 윤택하게 합니다.
- 해와 달이 규칙적으로 운행하며 세상에 추위와 더위를 번갈아 가져옵니다.
여기서 건(乾)은 남성적인 원리가 되고, 곤(坤)은 여성적인 원리가 됩니다. 추상적이고 이상적인 건(乾, 형이상학적 시작)에서부터 시작된 모든 이치가, 구체적인 만물인 곤(坤, 물/物)에서 현실로 구현되는 것입니다.
3. 쉬움과 간명함이 만드는 성공의 길
공자는 우주의 이치인 ‘역(易)’을 이해하는 것은 어렵지 않다고 말하며, 현인이 성공하는 비결을 ‘쉽고 간명함’이라는 두 단어로 압축합니다.
- 건(乾)의 원리를 통해 추상적인 이치를 깨닫고, 곤(坤)의 원리를 통해 그 이치가 현실에서 어떻게 간명하게 작용하는지를 배웁니다.
- 쉽게 알 수 있기에 친근해지고: 우주의 이치가 평범하고 간단하기 때문에 누구든 쉽게 이해할 수 있고, 사람들에게 친근하게 다가갈 수 있습니다.
- 쉽게 따를 수 있기에 이룸이 생긴다: 이치가 복잡하지 않고 간결하기 때문에, 사람들은 그 이치대로 쉽게 행동할 수 있고, 그 결과로 좋은 성과와 이룸(공적)이 생깁니다.
결국, 쉽게 알 수 있는 덕목은 오래 지속되게 만들고, 쉽게 따를 수 있는 길은 큰 성공을 이룰 수 있게 만듭니다.

공자는 이것이 바로 현인(賢人)이 갖춰야 할 덕(德)이며 업적(業績)이라고 말합니다. 쉽고 간명한 원리 속에 천하의 모든 이치가 담겨 있기에, 이 이치를 따른 사람은 세상의 중심에 확고히 자리 잡을 수 있다는 것입니다. 복잡하게 생각하지 말고, 자연처럼 단순하고 간결한 이치를 따르라는 가르침입니다.

Confucius says that all the principles of the world begin with two fundamental elements: heaven (乾) and earth (坤).

Changes in the world are made when strong and soft energy collide and interact with each other.

The eight basic elements of the main character, “Eight Diagrams” (八卦), constantly interact with each other and vibrate as if riding a swing.

Confucius says it is not difficult to understand the principles of the universe, ‘the Changes’, and compresses the secret of a wise man’s success into two words: ‘easy and simple.’
