‘권오석(權五奭)’ 교수의 ‘장자 외편(莊子 外篇)’은 ‘도가(道家)’ 사상의 핵심 경전인 ‘장자’의 전체 33편 중, 내편(內篇, 1~7편) 다음으로 중요하게 여겨지는 ‘외편(外篇, 8~22편)’의 내용을 번역하고 해설한 책입니다. ‘장자’는 장자(莊周)가 직접 쓴 내편과 제자 및 후학들이 장자의 사상을 계승하여 쓴 외편, 그리고 잡편(雜篇)으로 구성됩니다. 권오석 교수의 역해본은 외편에 담긴 장자 사상의 확장과 변용을 깊이 있게 다루면서, 세속과의 관계 속에서 어떻게 진정한 자유를 추구할 것인지에 대한 다양한 관점을 제시하는 것이 줄거리의 핵심입니다.
Professor Kwon Oh-seok’s “Chang tzu Outer Book” is a translation and explanation of the contents of “Outer Book (8-22)”, which is considered the second most important after the Inner Book (1-7), out of the 33 pieces of “Chang tzu”, a core scripture of the “Taoism” ideology. “Chang tzu” consists of “Inner Book” written by Zhangzi himself, “Outer Book” written by disciples and juniors, and “Scattered Book” written by inheriting Zhangzi’s thoughts. Professor Kwon Oh-seok’s reverse interpretation is at the core of the plot, which deals deeply with the expansion and transformation of the Zhangzi idea contained in the Outer Book and presents various perspectives on how to pursue true freedom in relation to the world.

The plot of the book explores how surprisingly similar mental and philosophical revolutions occurred in the four regions of the world (China, India, Israel, and Greece), where there was no interaction with each other during this period, and argues that the common insight of the resulting great religious and philosophical traditions is the key to overcoming the violence and crisis experienced by mankind today.

The plot of the book is to explore the sincerity of ancient Chinese society and universal human emotions through a total of 305 poems that contain the feelings of life, court rituals, and political criticism of ordinary people at that time, centered on the Zhou Dynasty for about 500 years from the 11th century BC to the 6th century BC.
